Lightweight mobility scooters are generally designed for portability, compact storage and shorter everyday journeys. Road-legal Class 3 scooters are usually larger and built for longer distances, with additional safety equipment for road use.
Class 2 and Class 3 mobility scooters can be used on pavements and pedestrian areas. Mobility scooters must not travel faster than 4mph when being used on a pavement.
A lightweight or folding mobility scooter is usually the most practical option for regular car travel. Check the scooter’s folded dimensions, minimum lifting weight and whether the battery or seat can be removed before purchasing.
Class 3 mobility scooters must be registered with the DVLA before being used on the road. Registration is free, and vehicle tax is not payable when the vehicle is correctly registered as a mobility scooter.
Travel range varies between models and depends on factors including battery capacity, user weight, terrain, temperature and driving style. Always compare the stated maximum range with the distance you expect to travel.
Customers with a qualifying disability or long-term medical condition may be eligible to purchase a mobility scooter without VAT. A VAT relief declaration will need to be completed as part of the order process.
