What Makes a Mobility Scooter Road Legal?

A road legal mobility scooter is a Class 3 vehicle that meets the UK's legal requirements for road use. To qualify, it must travel at no more than 8mph on the road and be limited to 4mph on pavements. It must also be fitted with front and rear lights, reflectors, direction indicators, an audible horn, a rear-view mirror and an efficient braking system.

Class 3 scooters must be registered with the DVLA. Registration is free, and they are exempt from vehicle tax. Users must be 14 years of age or older.

Should You Choose Class 2 or Class 3?

The difference comes down to where you plan to travel.

Class 2 scooters are limited to 4mph and are for pavement use only. They tend to be lighter and more compact, which suits shorter local journeys and indoor use.
